  • The setting begins on the Nellie, a ship at anchor on the Thames in London.  While anchoring here, Marlow tells his companions on the Nellie a narrative about his adventures as a riverboat captain on the Congo River sometime in the past.  The Congo story is preceded and followed by a visit to Brussels, Belgium, the headquarters for the company.

To be or not to be analysis0.docx

Oct. 31
3.1 Michael B. will lead today's discussion

Discussion of Harold Bloom's article on Hamlet.

Things to consider:
  • “To be or not to be” speech the class will “translate” this speech and/or rewrite it as two voices debating what to do (shows Hamlet's madness)Editing the “To be or not to be speech”:

  • The nunnery scene = representations of women
TO BE OR NOT TO BE...

16
Oct. 27
Mini-test on Act 1

2.2 - l. 170+:

Things to consider:
  • When asked what he is reading, Hamlet responds “words, words, words.”  Use as a leaping off point for a discussion of Shakespeare's language
  • Read excerpt from Harold Bloom's How to Read and Why (Ms. Hart will provide the handout)

15
Oct. 25

2.1-2.2, l.170 - Blake will lead today's discussion

Things to consider:
  • 2.1 compare Polonius' suggestions to Reynoldo with the advice he gave Laertes in 1.3
  • Compare the relationship between Polonius and Claudius to that between Horatio and Hamlet
Also consider the way Gertrude treats Polonius.  What does this say about his character (and hers)?
  • Review Act 1 for Mini-test (short answer)
  • Read excerpt from Harold Bloom's How to Read and Why (Ms. Hart will provide the handout)
  • Complete a summary of the reading for our next class
14
Oct. 21
1.4-1.5 - Ben will lead today's discussion

Things to consider:
  • The return of the ghost.  Why does it only speak to Hamlet?
Why can the ghost only appear at night?  (Discuss Renaissance ideas of nighttime as a time when ghosts may walk the earth, etc)

  • Review the outline of Artistotle's Theory of Tragedy in the Poetics
“Tragedy, then, is an imitation of an action that is serious, complete, and of a certain magnitude; in language embellished with each kind of artistic ornament, the several kinds being found in separate parts of the play; in the form of action, not of narrative; with incidents arousing pity and fear, wherewith to accomplish its katharsis of such emotions… Every Tragedy, therefore, must have six parts, which parts determine its quality, namely, Plot, Characters, Diction, Thought, Spectacle, Melody.” (Poetics).

  • B Story: Polonius, Laertes and Ophelia (the “other” family…) in 1.3
